Draw Paint Film Club - Grand Budapest Hotel

How can we have made it to our eighth Draw Paint Film workshop without even the mention of a Wes Anderson film! We won’t be around for the next few weeks as we take a quick break to have look and see how we can - not so much imprrrooove the night as we already think it’s banging but just how we can make it best for everyone and assess everything over the last few weeks!.

So we’ll pretend we had this all planned out from the start - that we were saving the best till last, our creme de le creme of film stills; our cherry on top of that delicious sponge. GrandBudapest Hotel has to be one of the most surreal, uncanny, shot to perfection, compositionally stunning films we’ve seen at Stills and Paint. We can’t wait to paint from this beauty on Thursday night!!

***

As ever we have a bring your own bottle policy. So, grab a tinny and park yourself down for a fun night of painting and great chat!

We encourage people to bring their own materials. We all have different personal tastes in terms of quality and method when it comes to painting. There is no one size fits all! It's important you work with a brand and material you are comfortable with. If you need any guidance on purchasing materials, and what is best for you please feel free to send us a message through our facebook page (link at bottom of page).

However , we also realise that this is an introduction to painting for many people so these can be provided.

Learning to draw from film stills is an amazing skill to develop. Increasingly, more and more artists work from photographs. Film stills give you access to quality formatted photography where every aspect of the image has been considered. It is a fascinating method of learning the technical devices of painting and drawing.

Draw Paint Film Club - Across the Universe

56 (35).jpg

We’ve been composing our Beatles playlist all week in preparation for this Thursday’s Draw Paint Film club. For you lovely lot we will be painting from Julie Taymor’s vibrant musical “Across the Universe”

There is a huge emphasis on theatrical technique in this film. 90% of the songs being recorded live on set. This is such a fun loving and colourful film, we know that it is perfect for Stills and Paint. It will teach you so much about the relationship of film to other art mediums and gives you a superb starting point for learning to draw and paint.

Draw Paint Film Club - Call Me By Your Name

By request of many, this Thursday we will be painting from Luca Guadagnino's magnificent coming of age film 'Call Me By Your Name"

Little bit of back story : "It's the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who's working as an intern for Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever".

callme003.jpg

'Call Me By Your Name' is a contemporary iconic masterpiece, owing its success to Director of Photography - Sayombhu Mukdeeprom. His remarkable consideration of lense allow him to create such idyllic scenes within Northern Italy. To the point that 'Call Me By Your Name' was shot using only one lense  and using only one film stock - KODAK VISION3 500T Color Negative Film 5219.
He remains firm in his belief that film shooting holds more aesthetic value than digital. And that is hard to argue when such outstanding final shots are produced from beginning to end .
"Observation was my goal on this film – to try to observe every moment..the film camera on set reminds us all that we are working with a finite resource, and this gives a special energy to everyone’s performance, especially the actors. The pauses to reload, the lovely sound of the film camera, create a productive atmosphere that feels alive. Digital feels kind of dead on set. Film is a more elegant and more flexible way to make a feature.”

Once again we are also joined by the wonderful Nico who will be entertaining us all night with his imecable melodic chords!

Draw Paint Film Club - Birdman

Is that you just back from the sunny end of Santa Ponza? Looking for a little mid week fun to jazz up this Scorchin’ Scottish Summer.
Well we’ve got it all going on this Thursday as we paint from Aljandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s jazzed up and exhilarating film “Birdman”

It keeps you on your toes this one. Cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki keeps us all in suspense presenting the story as one continuous, snaking take that never cuts away from the scenes.
These are excellent stills for understanding lighting and focus in particular. - to understand alternate lenses; how that influences the still and then how that influences the image we paint.

We also have phenomenal talent amongst us on Thursday night as we are joined by Lee from Flew the Arrow who will be down playing some sweet sweet instrumentals for us!

As ever we have a bring your own bottle policy. So, grab a tinny and park yourself down for a fun night of painting and great chat!

This week we take our inspiration from Sean Baker’s ‘The Florida Project’. Director of photography - Alexis Zabe, works with bright colours and exaggerated scales to create a dreamy and etherial quality that portrays a child’s saturated and epic view of the world.

Draw Paint Film

If you love caranage and a little societal breakdown at the cinema then you will love what we are bringing to the table! We will be referencing film stills and drawing from props that relate to Ben Wheatley's dystopian hit "High Rise", looking at how the technical devices in his work can be applied to drawing and painting.

Bring a tinny or a bottle and park yourself down for a night of painting, great chat and some fantastic live music!

We bring to the stage Miss Laura Edith Roxby - @silkyroxby. Laura is a Glasgow based painter who is known for her iconic and animated style of imagery in her work. She will be kicking the night off discussing her painting style and it's relationship to film and photography.

A large part of the aesthetic for the night is the silent screening of the film within the space. However, due to some technical glitches this may not be possible on our first night. But do no fret or be disheartened! Instead we bring you some fab acoustic instrumentals from some of Glasgow's most talented acts! >>> Stay tuned to find out who will be playing!

We encourage people to bring their own materials. We all have different personal tastes in terms of quality and method when it comes to painting. There is no one size fits all! It's important you work with a brand and material you are comfortable with. If you need any guidance on purchasing materials, and what is best for you please feel free to send us a message through our facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/stillsandpaint/?modal=admin_todo_tour

However , we also realise that this is an introduction to painting for many people so these can be provided for a £3 sur charge.
